Mission & Methods
MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of the Jewish Federation of Northeastern Pennsylvania is to build a strong and united Jewish community in order to ensure the perpetuation, welfare and creative community of the Jewish people. It is the community's central agency for meeting Jewish needs in Scranton, Lackawanna, Pike, Wayne and Monroe Counties, Israel, nationally and around the world. METHODS The Federation fulfills this Mission by: > Coordinated fundraising, resource development and distribution of resources through a federated system of local, regional, national and overseas programs and beneficiary agencies, which provide for the humanitarian, social welfare, educational and cultural needs of the Jewish people. > Coordinated and cooperative community planning to ensure that current and future Jewish needs are met, and that communally raised funds are employed in the most efficient manner, in service of communally recognized goals, purposes and needs, and in relation to communally affirmed priorities. > While recognizing and valuing the diversity inherent in Jewish life and the autonomy of local community institutions, synagogues and organizations, the Federation provides a forum for cooperative action and consensus building in order to promote unity, solve problems, defend our interests and meet Jewish needs. > Community relations activity aimed at educating the larger community about Judaism, Jewish culture and Jewish concerns; defending and advocating for the needs of Israel and for the security and freedom of endangered or oppressed Jews; combating bigotry and discrimination; improving interfaith and intergroup relations; strengthening the ties between America and Israel; supporting social justice for all people and development of leadership to fulfill these objectives. > Representing the local community to larger Jewish and general communities and government bodies, Joining with the other communities, Jewish and general, to achieve mutual goals. > Promoting positive Jewish identification, and the development of Jewish knowledge by supporting a system of formal and informal Jewish education and, identity building activities and institutions, in cooperation with local synagogues, temples, and other Jewish educational institutions. |
